Amarillo, Texas – Summer storms will return to the Texas Panhandle this weekend, bringing a renewed risk of heavy rain, lightning, and isolated flooding across Amarillo and surrounding counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a round of thunderstorms is likely between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Thursday, with additional activity possible into the weekend. While the chance of severe weather is currently low, localized flooding from repeated downpours remains a concern, especially in low-lying areas and along highways like US 287 and I-40.
Rain chances stay in the picture through Monday, with Saturday night and Sunday afternoon bringing the next best chance for storms. Friday will also bring summer heat, with high temperatures near 90°F and south winds up to 15 mph.
Drivers are urged to stay alert during peak afternoon travel hours, as pop-up storms may reduce visibility and cause ponding on roads. Residents should secure outdoor items and make sure their weather alerts are active.
