Amarillo, Texas – Texas heat returns in full force Sunday as Amarillo braces for a high of 98°F and dry, gusty winds topping 25 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, Sunday, July 20, kicks off a prolonged stretch of hot, sunny days across the Panhandle. Winds will blow from the south at 10 to 15 mph, increasing risk for wildfires and stressing power grids. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

Sunday’s high marks the start of a multi-day heatwave, with temperatures consistently hovering in the upper 90s through Friday, July 25. Overnight lows remain above 70°F, offering little overnight relief. No rain is expected until a slight 20% chance Wednesday before 1 a.m., which could briefly cool the region but won’t offer lasting drought relief.

Amarillo drivers should be cautious along I-40, especially in the afternoon, as heat and strong crosswinds may reduce visibility and increase tire blowout risks. Outdoor workers and those with limited AC access are particularly vulnerable.

With extended sunshine and little wind relief, energy use is expected to surge. Officials recommend reducing midday electricity use and charging mobile devices in advance.

This stretch mirrors late-July heat events in 2022, though wind gusts may be slightly higher.
