Houston, Texas – Thunderstorms and sweltering heat will grip Houston through Saturday night, posing risks of flash flooding and power outages as high temperatures climb past 96°F with heat indices above 105°F.

According to the National Weather Service, a 30–50% chance of showers and thunderstorms begins Friday afternoon and intensifies into Saturday, especially between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Storms may bring gusty winds, heavy rain, and lightning across Harris County, with scattered downpours possible along I-45, US-59, and Beltway 8. The storms are likely to taper off by Sunday, but the threat lingers overnight Friday and Saturday.

Travelers should avoid low-lying and flood-prone roads, especially during evening commutes. CenterPoint Energy is advising residents to charge devices ahead of potential power outages, while Houston ISD and area schools are monitoring the forecast for possible event delays. Air conditioning outages could also affect vulnerable populations—especially seniors and those without reliable cooling.

With the heat index expected to reach 105°F, residents should limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors. Saturday marks one of the hottest weekends of the summer, and the current pattern is reminiscent of July’s flash flooding that snarled traffic on the Gulf Freeway.

The chance for showers and thunderstorms drops to 20% by Monday night. Further alerts may be issued if storms strengthen or if flash flooding occurs.
