San Angelo, Texas – Severe thunderstorms could pound parts of West Texas late Monday night, bringing threats of very large hail, damaging winds up to 70 mph, and even isolated tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, storms are expected to intensify after 10 p.m. across the Permian Basin and Edwards Plateau, with the highest risk in an Enhanced zone stretching from west of Sterling City to Junction. This includes areas like Big Lake, Ozona, and Sonora. The activity may organize into a line of storms that pushes eastward overnight into Tuesday morning.

Road conditions could deteriorate quickly with wind-blown debris, downed power lines, or flash flooding. Travelers along US-87 and I-10 should avoid driving late tonight, especially in rural stretches with limited visibility. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

This marks the region’s most significant severe threat so far this spring. Large hail up to two inches in diameter has the potential to damage roofs, windows, and vehicles.

The storm system will shift eastward by sunrise, but additional advisories or watches may be issued through Tuesday morning. Stay tuned to local alerts and NOAA Weather Radio for real-time updates.
