Lubbock, Texas – Large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes are expected to hammer parts of West Texas Monday evening into early Tuesday, with the greatest risk centered on Lubbock, Midland, and Hobbs.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, severe storms will initiate over the Texas South Plains late Monday and intensify into the night, spreading east across the Permian Basin and southeast New Mexico. The most intense activity is forecast from 6 p.m. through 2 a.m., bringing hail up to 2 inches in diameter and wind gusts exceeding 70 mph. A few tornadoes are also possible in localized cells.

Cities including Odessa, Carlsbad, San Angelo, and Abilene sit in the broader risk zone, where travel disruptions, downed power lines, and property damage are possible. The green-dashed zone on the SPC outlook map pinpoints the highest threat for significant hail, particularly from Lubbock southward toward the Texas–New Mexico border.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, charge mobile devices, secure loose outdoor items, and avoid travel during peak storm hours. Emergency managers recommend identifying a safe shelter location now in case tornado warnings are issued overnight.

Storm warnings remain in effect through early Tuesday, with additional watches possible as the system tracks eastward.
