Amarillo, Texas – A line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing 70 mph wind gusts and large hail is expected to sweep across the Texas Panhandle through 1 a.m. Monday, threatening power outages, tree damage, and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 326 was issued at 6:05 p.m. Sunday, covering 26 counties, including Potter, Randall, Carson, Gray, and Deaf Smith. The storms may also bring frequent lightning and isolated flash flooding in low-lying areas.

Residents in Amarillo, Canyon, Dumas, and surrounding communities should secure loose outdoor items, charge cell phones, and remain indoors as the storms approach. TXDOT advises drivers to be alert for falling limbs, downed lines, and blinding rain, particularly along I-40 and US-87.

Hail up to the size of quarters is possible in stronger cells, especially across Ochiltree, Hansford, and Hemphill counties. Emergency officials warn that sudden wind shifts and visibility drops could make driving dangerous after sunset.

The severe threat may taper off by early morning, but more watches or warnings could be issued if storms persist or intensify. Residents should monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for updates throughout the evening.
