Houston, Texas – Strong to severe thunderstorms could strike Southeast Texas on Sunday afternoon, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and pockets of heavy rain to the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Houston-Galveston, a disturbance moving in from the north is expected to trigger storm development across SE Texas during the afternoon and evening hours. While storms will remain scattered, the Piney Woods and Brazos Valley face the greatest risk for severe impacts.

Crockett, Huntsville, and College Station lie within a slight risk zone, where wind gusts could exceed 60 mph and hail may reach quarter size or larger. Rainfall rates may overwhelm drainage in low-lying areas, especially during peak evening travel.

The NWS warns that although widespread tornado activity is not expected, an isolated brief tornado cannot be ruled out. Residents across Greater Houston and surrounding counties should monitor local alerts and be prepared to shelter if warnings are issued.

Outdoor plans may need to be adjusted, and drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and stay weather-aware. Additional updates and watches could be issued as conditions evolve into Sunday evening.
