Austin, TX – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for all of South Central Texas and parts of Deep South Texas on Sunday, citing strong north winds and very low humidity expected to create critical fire weather conditions.

The warning will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. CST Sunday, covering a broad area including San Antonio, Austin, Kerrville, Del Rio, Uvalde, Bexar, Travis, and Maverick Counties, as well as Zapata, Jim Hogg, Brooks, and Kenedy Counties farther south.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Austin/San Antonio and Brownsville, north winds between 15 and 30 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, will combine with relative humidity levels as low as 15 to 20 percent. These conditions will make any new fires spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and use extreme caution with heat sources, including grills, campfires, and equipment that may spark. Even small embers could ignite grass or brush fires under these dry and windy conditions.

Temperatures are forecast to reach the low 70s Sunday afternoon, before dropping sharply behind a strong cold front Sunday night. Fire crews across the region are on heightened alert.
