MIDLAND, Texas – A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck early Sunday morning west of Dallas, shaking parts of the Interstate 20 corridor near Westbrook and Big Spring. The U.S. Geological Survey and Texas Seismological Network (TexNet) reported the quake at 1:08 a.m. CDT Sunday about 5 kilometers west-southwest of Westbrook, with a shallow depth of 5.3 kilometers.

The tremor was felt across portions of Mitchell, Howard, and Glasscock Counties, with residents reporting light shaking in Big Spring, Colorado City, and as far east as Abilene. According to preliminary data, no significant damage or injuries were reported. The USGS “Did You Feel It?” survey registered a maximum intensity of IV (light).

TexNet scientists noted the quake’s shallow depth likely contributed to brief, noticeable shaking but minimal structural impact. The PAGER impact scale rated the event Green, indicating a low likelihood of casualties or economic losses. Aftershock probabilities remain low, with less than a 1 percent chance of a larger event this week.

Authorities advise residents to review basic earthquake safety practices, including securing heavy furniture and knowing safe drop-cover-hold locations indoors. Motorists along I-20 between Midland and Abilene should remain alert for any localized debris checks or road inspections Sunday morning, though major disruptions are not expected.
