Amarillo, TX – A significant weather system is expected to move through the Texas Panhandle at the end of the week, potentially bringing moderate rainfall and winter weather impacts to the region.

According to the US National Weather Service in Amarillo, precipitation could begin as early as 4 a.m. Saturday, with the most likely period for impactful weather expected between 5 a.m. and noon. The system may produce up to 1 inch of liquid precipitation in some areas, though totals will vary. Forecast models show a 40-70% chance for many locations, including Amarillo, Dumas, and Pampa, to receive moderate rainfall.

In addition to rain, the approaching system may also bring moderate to heavy snowfall, particularly to central and southwestern parts of the Panhandle. The latest forecast shows a 50-70% likelihood for winter weather impacts in areas such as Dalhart and Clayton, with the potential for slushy or icy roads, reduced visibility, and wind-driven snow.

Meteorologists caution that the region has experienced recent warming, so snow totals are still uncertain due to surface temperatures hovering around freezing. However, the possibility of impactful snow—especially early Saturday—remains a concern as the system trends further south.

Motorists are urged to prepare for hazardous driving conditions, particularly on Saturday night when icy roads may develop. Visibility could also be limited by falling and blowing snow.

The system is expected to exit the area by early Sunday morning. Residents are encouraged to monitor the forecast closely for updates as conditions and track may still shift.
