Amarillo, Texas – Drivers across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles are facing dangerous winter travel conditions beginning Friday morning as a slow-moving winter storm spreads snow and ice across the region, with impacts expected to last through early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from early Friday through early Sunday for the Texas Panhandle and the Oklahoma Panhandle. Snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches are expected across much of the region, including Amarillo, Canyon, Pampa, Borger, Dumas, Perryton, Guymon, and Shamrock. A light glaze of ice is also possible, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Snow and mixed precipitation will overspread the area around daybreak Friday, quickly making roads slick for the morning commute. Conditions are expected to worsen Friday afternoon and evening as snowfall continues, with hazardous travel likely along I-40, U.S. 287, U.S. 87, and Highway 83. Reduced visibility and snow-packed roads may persist into Saturday before conditions slowly improve late Saturday night.
Officials urge residents to delay unnecessary travel, secure supplies ahead of time, and prepare vehicles with winter emergency kits. Motorists can check road conditions by calling 800-452-9292 in Texas or 844-465-4997 in Oklahoma. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through early Sunday, and lingering slick spots may continue even after snowfall tapers off.
