Oklahoma City, OK – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected across western Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle through 11 p.m. Sunday, with damaging wind gusts and large hail posing the greatest threats to residents and travelers in the region.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for 24 counties, including Beckham, Custer, Kiowa, and Washita in Oklahoma, and Gray, Hutchinson, and Wheeler in Texas. The watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. CDT, with storms capable of producing wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.
Roads like U.S. 283 and I-40 may become hazardous under rapid storm development. Power outages and downed trees are also possible in areas like Elk City, Sayre, and Pampa. Residents should secure outdoor objects, remain indoors during warnings, and charge devices ahead of possible outages.
Storms are expected to weaken after sunset, though isolated strong cells may linger into the late evening hours. Additional warnings may be issued if storms maintain intensity past 11 p.m.
