Amarillo, Texas – Damaging winds and intense downpours are expected to hammer the Texas Panhandle tonight, with the most dangerous weather hitting between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday. Residents from Amarillo to Pampa and Borger should prepare for power outages, flooded streets, and possible road closures as severe thunderstorms sweep through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms could bring wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter, and locally intense rainfall at rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour. The threat of flash flooding is highest in areas that received rain recently, making roads like I-40 near Amarillo and Vega especially hazardous overnight. Heavy rainfall could quickly lead to flooded intersections, stalled vehicles, and overnight rescues.

Communities in Pampa, Borger, Clarendon, and Wellington face a 60–70% chance of storms with frequent lightning and damaging winds. Localized flash flooding is the top concern—drivers are urged to avoid low-lying areas and heed the warning: Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Make sure cell phones are fully charged and weather alerts are activated before heading to bed.

The risk for isolated tornadoes remains low, but a strong supercell can’t be ruled out. Stay tuned for updates and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Further advisories and alerts are possible if conditions worsen before sunrise.
