Amarillo, Texas – Heavy rain and storms could drench Amarillo starting Thursday afternoon, raising the risk of flash flooding and difficult travel on I-40 and I-27 just ahead of the long weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, showers and thunderstorms are expected to begin after 1 p.m. Thursday and increase in intensity by evening. Rainfall could be heavy enough to cause localized flooding in low-lying areas and along underpasses. A 50% chance of storms continues Thursday night, with more unsettled weather through the July Fourth holiday.
Storms won’t be a one-day event. The NWS warns that the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles face a multi-day risk of torrential downpours from Friday through at least Tuesday. While no watches are active yet, drivers should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions — especially on rural highways where water can pool.
