Amarillo, Texas – Heavy overnight storms in the Texas Panhandle have prompted a flood advisory for Hansford and Sherman counties, with minor flooding expected in low-lying and rural areas through early Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, Doppler radar showed 2 to 3 inches of rain had already fallen by 2:15 a.m. Additional rainfall of up to 1.5 inches is possible, keeping the advisory in effect until 3:45 a.m. Officials warn that nighttime flooding is particularly dangerous, as water on roads is harder to see.

The heaviest rain is affecting mainly rural areas of western Hansford and northeastern Sherman counties, where poor drainage can quickly lead to ponding on roads and fields. Drivers are urged to avoid travel in these areas if possible and to never attempt crossing water-covered roads.

While no widespread flooding is expected, localized trouble spots may linger into the morning commute. Emergency management officials encourage residents to remain alert, especially in areas prone to quick runoff.

The advisory remains in effect until early Monday, though more alerts could be issued if rainfall persists.
