Amarillo, Texas – Heavy thunderstorms are expected across the Texas Panhandle through Saturday night, raising concerns for flash flooding, damaging winds, and possible hail. The National Weather Service in Amarillo warns that rainfall rates could reach up to two inches per hour, with localized flooding risks highest west of Amarillo, including Dalhart, Dumas, and Vega.
According to the National Weather Service, storms may begin as early as mid-afternoon Saturday, with the strongest activity most likely between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Damaging winds up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail are possible in isolated western counties. Overnight, heavy rainfall is expected to continue, with the heaviest downpours between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m.
Cities including Amarillo, Borger, and Pampa face a 60–70% chance of storms, while Dumas and Vega could see probabilities nearing 80%. Flooding could be especially dangerous overnight, when poor visibility may make water-covered roads difficult to spot. Officials urge drivers to avoid flooded areas and remember the safety warning: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
Showers and storms may linger into early Sunday, with additional updates possible if rainfall persists.
