Amarillo, Texas – A sharp turn toward winter arrives late Tuesday as a strong cold front sends temperatures plunging into the mid-20s by early Wednesday across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. The National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a Freeze Watch for late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning, warning of potentially damaging cold.

According to the National Weather Service, subfreezing air will grip much of the region—including Amarillo, Canyon, Dumas, Borger, Dalhart, and Guymon—between midnight and 9 a.m. Wednesday. Widespread frost and a hard freeze could end the growing season and damage unprotected pipes, plants, and irrigation systems. Rural areas and low-lying valleys may see temperatures drop as low as 25 degrees.

Drivers may also encounter patchy fog and frost on bridges before sunrise Wednesday, particularly along I-27, I-40, and U.S. 287. Homeowners are urged to cover tender vegetation, insulate outdoor faucets, and bring pets indoors. Local utilities recommend checking thermostats and space heaters ahead of the cold spell to prevent equipment failures.

According to TxDOT and regional emergency managers, no major travel disruptions are expected, but early-morning commuters should plan for slower starts and reduced visibility in rural corridors. The chill eases slightly Thursday, but another front this weekend could reinforce colder air into early next week.
