Amarillo, Texas – Drivers across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles could face visibility dropping to near zero in dense fog early Saturday morning, creating hazardous conditions for morning commuters.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, fog is expected to develop overnight and last into the early hours of Saturday, reducing visibility below one mile. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely by Saturday afternoon, with the most widespread activity expected from Saturday night through Sunday afternoon.

Communities including Amarillo, Dumas, Borger, and Dalhart should prepare for slick roads during storms and possible delays for weekend travel. The Panhandle’s rural highways, including stretches of U.S. 287 and U.S. 87, could be especially difficult to navigate in fog before sunrise.

While rain chances drop off early next week, isolated storms remain possible into Tuesday. Winds could gust up to 20 mph Sunday and Monday, adding to travel concerns for high-profile vehicles.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary driving in fog, keep headlights on low beam, and allow extra time for travel. Keep phones and weather radios charged in case warnings are issued.

Storm chances remain in the forecast through Tuesday, with clearer skies expected by midweek.
