Amarillo, Texas – Storms capable of producing 65 mph winds and penny-size hail could brush across the western Texas Panhandle tonight, especially between 8 p.m. and midnight. While the overall risk remains low, residents from Dalhart to Vega should be prepared for sudden strong gusts and brief downpours.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, any storms that do develop could bring damaging wind gusts and hail up to 0.75 inches in diameter. The threat area includes Dumas, Stratford, and Hereford, with storms most likely arriving between 8 p.m. and midnight following a possible start as early as 7 p.m.

Wind damage is the primary concern, with isolated pockets of stronger activity possible along the U.S. 87 and U.S. 385 corridors. While widespread impacts are not expected, outdoor events and travel in the western Panhandle could be affected if storms form.

Officials urge residents to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and to stay indoors if warnings are issued. “Be ready to shelter if storms approach your area tonight,” NWS stated in its evening advisory.

Additional updates may follow if storm development increases. Tonight’s activity is expected to taper off after midnight.
