Amarillo, TX – A weekend weather system once expected to bring rain to the Texas Panhandle is now taking a more northern track, significantly reducing precipitation chances across the region, according to the National Weather Service in Amarillo.

According to updated guidance early Thursday, weather models show the disturbance weakening and shifting northward. Forecasters now estimate rain chances below 10 percent for Saturday and Sunday, meaning most of the Panhandle will stay warm and dry through the weekend.

Meteorologists say the system’s altered path will keep its moisture and lift too far north to benefit the local area, eliminating what had been a brief window for scattered showers. The update marks the second significant downgrade to weekend precipitation expectations this week.

While the weekend is now expected to be quiet and mild, NWS Amarillo notes that there are “hints” of another potential system that could move through the region by the middle of next week. Confidence in that system, however, remains low as models continue to vary on timing, track, and strength.

Residents should expect seasonably warm temperatures and dry conditions for outdoor plans across Amarillo, Canyon, Dumas, Dalhart, Hereford, and surrounding communities. No weather-related travel impacts are anticipated this weekend.

Forecasters will continue to monitor next week’s system and provide updates as confidence improves.
