Lubbock, Texas – Residents across the Texas Panhandle should brace for life-threatening weather late Sunday as severe thunderstorms bring the risk of tornadoes, softball-size hail, and 90 mph wind gusts to the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a moderate risk for severe weather is in effect through Sunday evening across areas including Lubbock, Plainview, Matador, and Childress. The most dangerous conditions are expected between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., with storms capable of producing destructive hail, localized flash flooding, and isolated tornadoes.

Communities from Morton to Aspermont are under threat, especially along U.S. Highway 62 and I-27. Hail larger than baseballs could cause significant damage to vehicles, roofs, and crops, while the extreme wind gusts may down trees and power lines. Tornado potential has been marked as “possible” across much of the region, with rapid storm development expected.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor NOAA weather radio, and have a shelter plan ready. Avoid travel if warnings are issued and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions.

This is the most significant severe threat of the season so far. Additional watches or warnings may be issued through the evening.
