Amarillo, TX – A low-end threat of severe storms could bring damaging winds and quarter-size hail to portions of the eastern Texas Panhandle this afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms are expected to develop between 4 and 10 p.m. Wednesday, mainly affecting areas such as Canadian, Perryton, Pampa, and Wheeler. The chances of storm development range between 10% and 20%, with the strongest activity expected in the northeastern Panhandle.

The primary risks from these storms include hail up to 1 inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 mph. While tornado potential remains very low, isolated cells could intensify briefly. The National Weather Service noted that most residents will remain warm and dry, but those in the affected corridor should monitor conditions closely.

The area remains under a Level 1 (Marginal Risk) classification on the severe weather scale. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, review their weather safety plans, and remain weather-aware, particularly during evening commutes.

Storm activity is expected to taper off late tonight, and no widespread severe weather is currently forecast for Thursday. Updates will be provided by the NWS Amarillo as conditions evolve.
