Amarillo, TX – Residents in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles should prepare for strong winds and fire risks continuing through Sunday. The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning and a Red Flag Warning for the region, as gusts up to 35 mph are expected. Blowing dust may significantly reduce visibility, especially along major roadways, including I-40 and US-287.
According to the National Weather Service, critical fire weather conditions remain a concern through Sunday evening. Dry conditions and strong winds create an elevated wildfire risk, making outdoor burning dangerous. Officials urge residents to avoid any activities that could spark fires and to secure loose outdoor items.
Looking ahead, Sunday will bring sunshine and highs near 65°F, but wind chill values may drop to the low 30s in the morning. Winds will shift west at 5 to 15 mph before calming Sunday night. Monday’s St. Patrick’s Day forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and a high of 80°F, with strong afternoon wind gusts up to 35 mph.
By midweek, temperatures will cool, with highs near 54°F on Wednesday before rebounding to the upper 60s by Friday. The calmer conditions midweek will provide relief from the weekend’s high winds.
Residents should monitor local forecasts for updates and use caution while traveling, especially in areas prone to dust storms.
