Amarillo, Texas – Thunderstorms may turn strong across the Texas Panhandle Sunday afternoon into Monday, bringing the risk of hail and damaging winds. The National Weather Service warns that a few storms could become severe, especially west of Amarillo, before high pressure brings heat and sunshine midweek.

According to forecasters, Sunday will be partly sunny with a high near 80 before thunderstorms increase in the afternoon. Storm chances continue Sunday night, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Monday brings another round of storms, with highs reaching 87. Damaging wind gusts and small hail remain the primary hazards during this period.

Drivers along I-40, I-27, and U.S. 287 should prepare for rapidly changing road conditions, including reduced visibility and slick pavement. Outdoor plans, especially evening events, may need adjustments as storms build in.

By Tuesday, the pattern shifts to hotter and drier conditions. Sunny skies return with highs near 91, lasting into the end of the week. Wednesday and Thursday will see highs near 89 to 90, with overnight lows staying in the 60s.

NOAA’s extended precipitation outlook keeps much of the Panhandle leaning below normal for rainfall, suggesting this early-week storm activity may be the last chance for measurable rain for several days.
