Amarillo, TX – Drivers across the Texas Panhandle are being urged to prepare today as forecasters warn that fast-moving snow squalls could develop this season, bringing sudden whiteouts and rapidly slick roads just as early holiday travel begins to increase. The bursts may impact travel from Amarillo to Canyon, Dumas, Dalhart, and along major routes including I-40 and US-287.
Snow squalls typically last under an hour but can be among the most dangerous winter events. Sudden whiteouts combined with flash freezing can instantly turn highways slick, contributing to multi-vehicle crashes during past cold-season outbreaks across the Plains. Officials consistently warn that avoiding the road during a Snow Squall Warning is the safest choice. Meteorologists often emphasize: “You don’t want to be on the road when it happens.”
If a squall hits while you’re already driving, experts recommend slowing down gradually, turning on hazard lights, and increasing following distance significantly. Motorists should avoid slamming brakes, stay in their lane, and never stop in a travel lane where visibility may drop to near zero. Safe pull-offs—such as rest areas, exits, or parking lots—are the best places to wait until conditions improve.
Panhandle residents heading out for errands, ranch work, or early holiday shopping should keep winter emergency kits in their vehicles, including blankets, chargers, water, scrapers, and traction materials like sand or cat litter. Homeowners should secure outdoor items in case sudden wind gusts accompany the squalls.
Forecasters will continue monitoring conditions throughout the afternoon, with more advisories possible.
