Amarillo, Texas — Snow is possible across the Texas Panhandle late this week as the coldest air mass of the winter so far pushes into the region, setting the stage for a sharply colder weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a strong cold front arriving Thursday will usher in bitter temperatures, with snow chances developing Friday and Saturday. Forecast confidence remains moderate due to uncertainty surrounding the exact track of the weather system and how quickly the cold air surges south.

In one scenario, favored by about 60% of guidance, a slower-moving system would allow enough moisture to reach the Panhandles, bringing a 50% to 80% chance of at least 1 inch of snow. A faster-moving cold front, the alternate scenario, would push moisture farther south, limiting snow chances locally and confining higher accumulations to areas south of the region.

Regardless of snowfall amounts, forecasters stress that very cold temperatures are likely late this week into the weekend, creating hazardous conditions. Residents are urged to prepare for winter travel, dress for extreme cold, and bring pets indoors.

The National Weather Service says forecast details will continue to be refined over the coming days, and additional updates are expected as the system approaches.
