Amarillo, Texas – Residents across the Texas Panhandle face a threat of large hail and damaging winds Sunday evening as severe thunderstorms develop and move through the region. Drivers in Amarillo, Dumas, and Pampa should be alert for fast-changing conditions and possible warnings, especially between 4 p.m. and midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, isolated thunderstorms may begin forming as early as 3 p.m., with the highest risk for severe weather between 4 and 9 p.m. for much of the Panhandle. Storms are expected to enter the western Panhandles—including areas near Dalhart and Dumas—between 6 and 8 p.m., moving in from New Mexico. Hazards include hail up to one inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching 70 mph.

City and county officials urge residents to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and be ready to seek shelter quickly if storms approach. Travel could become hazardous on highways such as I-40 and US-87, and downed trees or power lines are possible. Outdoor events and evening travel should be reconsidered or delayed.

This marks one of the summer’s most significant thunderstorm threats so far, with scattered severe storms possible through midnight. More alerts may be issued if the situation worsens.
