Amarillo, Texas – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles tonight, with localized flash flooding possible in low-lying areas and poorly drained roadways.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms will intensify late Sunday with heavy rain, strong winds, and frequent lightning. Flash flood-prone regions like Palo Duro Canyon, Potter County, and parts of Cimarron and Deaf Smith counties should prepare for brief road inundations. A 20% chance of thunderstorms continues into Sunday night, tapering off by early Monday morning.
In addition to storm threats, an extended stretch of extreme heat is forecast to return by midweek. Temperatures will surge into the upper 90s by Tuesday and could break 100°F by Wednesday, especially in Amarillo, Dumas, and Perryton. Southwest winds may also increase fire danger in drier counties, including Lipscomb and Hansford.
Residents are urged to monitor local alerts, avoid flood-prone roads after dark, and stay hydrated as the region transitions from storms to heat. While no official spotter activation is planned, updates may follow if conditions worsen.
