Amarillo, Texas – Scattered thunderstorms are set to bring brief relief from the Texas Panhandle’s July heat, with the best chance for rain arriving Wednesday and Thursday. Residents from Amarillo to the northern Panhandles should be prepared for seasonal highs in the upper 80s to low 100s, as storms target the region through Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the highest precipitation chances—between 20% and 40%—are forecast for Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and evenings, mainly across the northern Panhandles. Central and northern counties, including Dumas and Borger, could see the most rainfall, while Amarillo may still pick up scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Motorists should watch for slick roads and reduced visibility during afternoon downpours, especially along US-287 and I-40. Brief gusty winds and lightning may accompany storms. While the rain will help curb temperatures for a short period, moisture in the air will keep it feeling muggy, and heat returns by the weekend.

Residents are advised to stay weather-aware, avoid flooded roads, and secure outdoor items. Storm chances drop to just 10% by Friday as highs climb back into the low triple digits. More updates may be issued if additional watches or warnings are needed.
