Amarillo, Texas – Drivers across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles should prepare for deteriorating travel conditions late Thursday as a two-round system brings rain first, then accumulating snow that could lead to slick roads into Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the first round of precipitation arrives tonight into early Thursday morning, mainly as rain. A second, colder round develops late Thursday night into Friday morning, with rain changing to snow from north to south. The most likely window for impactful snow runs from around midnight through Friday evening, before tapering off early Saturday.
The highest chances for accumulation are across the northern combined Panhandles, including Boise City, Guymon, Stratford, Dalhart, and Dumas. Those areas have a 60 to 90 percent chance of at least one inch of snow, with a lower but notable chance for totals exceeding five inches near the Oklahoma border. Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, and Perryton may see lighter accumulations, though a shift in the storm track could increase totals.
Snow-covered and slick roadways are the primary concern, especially during the Friday morning commute. Bridges and overpasses could become hazardous first as temperatures drop.
Residents are urged to monitor updates, allow extra travel time, and prepare for changing road conditions. While exact snowfall totals remain uncertain, winter travel impacts appear increasingly likely late Thursday into Friday.
