Amarillo, Texas – Damaging thunderstorms are set to threaten the northern Texas Panhandle late Wednesday, with the greatest risk for severe weather—including a low tornado threat—expected between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Thursday. Residents in Amarillo, Stratford, Dalhart, and Guymon should prepare for a dangerous night as storms roll through the region.

According to the National Weather Service Amarillo, the main window for severe storms will open by 5 p.m., but the highest risk comes overnight, peaking between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Hazards include wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail up to quarter size, and the possibility of a brief tornado. The strongest storms will be focused north of Amarillo, affecting highways such as US-87, US-54, and communities like Boise City and Perryton.

Flash flooding is also a serious concern, with some locations possibly seeing over 1 inch of rain per hour and total rainfall reaching 3 to 5 inches in isolated spots. Nighttime flooding could impact travel—especially low-lying roads near Stratford, Gruver, and Beaver. Power outages are possible where wind gusts peak.

Have multiple ways to receive warnings, keep mobile devices charged, and be prepared to move to shelter if alerts are issued. If driving, never cross flooded roads. This system could prompt additional advisories into Thursday morning as storms exit the region.
