Amarillo, Texas – Isolated thunderstorms could spark across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles late this afternoon, with the highest risk window stretching from 3 p.m. through midnight Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storm chances remain low—between 10% and 25%—but any cells that develop may bring lightning, heavy downpours, and gusty winds reaching 50 to 60 mph. The most likely areas for activity include Canadian, Pampa, and Wheeler, where potential storm coverage is slightly higher.

Cities like Amarillo, Dalhart, and Guymon fall in zones with a 10% to 20% chance of storms. While widespread impacts are not expected, the NWS warns that sudden wind gusts or cloud-to-ground lightning could disrupt outdoor activities or evening commutes. Residents are advised to secure loose objects and monitor local alerts, especially if traveling on I-40 or U.S. 287.

This is part of a continued summer pattern of pop-up storms driven by daytime heat and moisture. No watches are currently in effect, but conditions could shift quickly.

Storm chances end by midnight, though similar patterns may repeat later this week.
