Amarillo, TX – A strong cold front will move across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles this weekend, ushering in much colder air and the region’s first widespread freeze of the season, according to the National Weather Service in Amarillo.

Temperatures will fall sharply behind the front Saturday night, with lows dipping into the mid-20s to near 30°F. Sunday will stay chilly with highs only reaching the mid-40s to mid-50s under sunny skies. The coldest air arrives Sunday night, when widespread lows between 20 and 30°F are expected — well below the seasonal average.

Forecasters urge residents to take precautions ahead of the freeze by covering sensitive plants, insulating outdoor pipes, and ensuring pets have warm shelter. Winds will remain light, but the cold will linger into Monday morning before a gradual warmup begins.

By Monday, highs will rebound into the upper 50s and 60s with sunny skies returning across the Panhandles.
