Amarillo, Texas – Strong afternoon storms could soak the Texas Panhandle today, with flash flooding possible from Amarillo to Boise City as rain rates climb to 1.5 inches per hour.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a continued monsoon pattern is funneling high moisture into the region, fueling scattered thunderstorms across the western and central Panhandles. Storms are expected to become more intense by late afternoon, especially around Dumas, Dalhart, and Borger, where repeated downpours over saturated ground may trigger flooding on roads and low-lying areas.

While rain chances hover between 10% and 40%, the real risk lies in isolated cells producing heavy bursts of rainfall and minor wet microbursts. Gusty winds are unlikely but not impossible. Motorists should watch for water pooling on highways like US-87, US-60, and I-40, especially during the evening commute. Flash flooding may develop quickly in poor drainage zones or under stalled storms.

Temperatures are climbing into the mid to upper 80s today, with widespread 90s expected by Friday across the region—from Canadian to Wellington. Storm chances remain low but present through the weekend.

More updates will follow if watches or warnings are issued. Stay alert and avoid flooded roads.
