Amarillo, Texas – Flash flooding remains a concern across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles this afternoon as another round of rain and thunderstorms develops between 1 and 11 p.m., especially west of Amarillo and into northeast New Mexico.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, rainfall totals from overnight storms reached 2.96″ in Boise City, Oklahoma, and exceeded 2″ in parts of the western Panhandles. Some radar estimates in the northwest Panhandle suggest isolated spots picked up as much as 3 to 5 inches.
The ground across the region is already saturated, especially in counties like Dallam, Hartley, and Cimarron. Any additional rainfall—particularly heavy downpours at rates of 1 inch per hour—could quickly lead to flash flooding on rural roads and low-lying areas. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and use caution through the evening commute.
Cities like Dalhart, Stratford, and Texline face a 40–60% chance of additional storms today, while Amarillo and Vega are in a lower risk zone but still may see periods of rain. Outdoor plans should be postponed, and residents should charge devices in case of power disruptions.
Warnings may be extended into the evening as conditions evolve.
