Amarillo, Texas – Critical fire weather conditions are expected across the Texas Panhandle on Tuesday as wind gusts strengthen to 65 mph, increasing wildfire and blowing dust risks.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, southwest to west winds will gust between 45 and 65 mph under very dry conditions. The strongest winds are expected from 9 a.m. through 6 p.m., with critical fire weather conditions in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Forecasters warn that any fires that develop could spread rapidly due to low humidity and high winds. Officials advise residents to avoid activities that could create sparks and to use extreme caution if traveling or working outdoors.
Blowing dust is also possible, particularly across the central and eastern Panhandle. Some areas face a 40% to 70% chance of reduced visibility due to dust, which may create hazardous driving conditions on highways including Interstate 40 and U.S. Highway 287.
Loose outdoor objects may be blown around, and high-profile vehicles could experience difficult travel conditions. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and remain alert for rapidly changing visibility on roadways.
The combination of strong winds, dry fuels, and low humidity makes wildfire ignition and spread more likely across the region.
