Amarillo, Texas – A fast-moving cold front will sweep across the Texas Panhandle today, setting up a narrow window for severe storms that could impact travel and power lines by late evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the front will push south through the region between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m., shifting winds from west at 10–15 mph to north at 15–25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. The boundary may slow or stall near the southern Panhandle by mid-afternoon, a key factor that could trigger storm development.

Storms could begin as early as 4 p.m., but the most likely window for severe weather is between 8 p.m. and midnight, especially southeast of Amarillo toward Clarendon and Wellington. Any stronger storms may produce hail up to 1.5 inches and wind gusts near 70 mph.

Drivers along I-40 and U.S. 287 should prepare for sudden visibility drops and strong crosswinds. Residents are urged to monitor alerts and ensure multiple ways to receive warnings overnight.

Additional updates are expected as the position of the front becomes clearer later today.
