Amarillo, Texas – Wind chills across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles could plummet as low as -17°F this weekend, with dangerously cold air settling in from Friday morning through late Sunday. Alongside accumulating snow, highs may not rise above the low 20s for many areas, and exposed skin could freeze in minutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a powerful Arctic front is expected to send temperatures crashing starting early Friday. Wind chill values from Dalhart to Perryton and Guymon could fall into the -10 to -17°F range during overnight and morning hours Saturday and Sunday, with snow expected both Friday and Saturday.
Cities like Pampa, Stratford, and Spearman are already under advisories, and emergency managers urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and cover all exposed skin. Icy roads are also a concern, particularly during morning commutes. Those without reliable heating should seek shelter or warming centers ahead of the deep freeze.
The bitter cold is expected to loosen its grip slightly by Monday, but single-digit lows and freezing highs may linger into early next week. Further advisories are possible as more snowfall develops.
