Amarillo, TX —
Dust clouds and fire risks are sweeping through the Texas Panhandle today, creating hazardous travel and air quality concerns across Amarillo and nearby counties.
The National Weather Service has issued a Blowing Dust Advisory and a Red Flag Warning effective until 10 PM CDT Tuesday, April 1. Strong southwest winds between 30 to 40 mph, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph, are expected across Interstate 40 and surrounding highways, reducing visibility and significantly increasing wildfire threats.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, blowing dust will reduce visibility to as low as one-quarter mile, particularly in Hutchinson, Potter, Randall, Armstrong, and Carson counties. At the same time, low humidity levels—falling below 9%—create critical fire conditions through this evening. Drivers should use extreme caution on I-40 and U.S. 287, while residents with respiratory issues are urged to stay indoors.
Wednesday, April 2 Outlook:
The winds ease slightly, with highs near 68°F and a 40% chance of showers by evening. Skies will be mostly cloudy.
Extended 5-Day Amarillo Forecast:
