Amarillo drivers and residents should prepare for a stormy Sunday evening as thunderstorms build across the eastern Texas Panhandle. Hazards include large hail and damaging winds, with the National Weather Service warning that spotter activation may be needed later today. Travelers on I-40 and U.S. 287 could see rapid changes in visibility and road conditions, especially after dark.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms will linger into Sunday night before clearing by early Monday morning. Monday brings mostly sunny skies with highs near 86 degrees, offering temporary relief from the unsettled weather. Winds will stay light out of the south, keeping conditions stable for most of the day.

By Tuesday, sunny skies dominate early before another round of scattered storms moves in Tuesday night. The main risk then shifts to lightning and gusty winds, though severe potential remains low. Wednesday and Thursday bring additional storm chances, keeping the Panhandle in a pattern of on-and-off rainfall as temperatures slowly cool toward the weekend.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items tonight, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and stay tuned for weather updates. Power outages and minor flooding in low-lying areas remain possible with stronger storms.

Warnings remain in effect for this evening, with more advisories possible by midweek.
