Amarillo, Texas – Dangerous triple-digit heat and scattered thunderstorms are set to challenge residents across the Texas Panhandle today and through the weekend, with life-threatening conditions possible in Palo Duro Canyon and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for central and eastern Panhandle counties through this evening, as temperatures soar above 100°F. An Extreme Heat Warning is in place for Palo Duro Canyon Friday afternoon and evening, where heat indices could top 110°F. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms may pop up late Friday and again through Monday, bringing strong wind gusts and localized downpours—especially northwest of Amarillo along US-287 and in counties like Sherman, Dallam, and Cimarron.

Travelers and outdoor workers are urged to avoid strenuous activities during the hottest hours, stay hydrated, and never leave pets or children in vehicles. If storms develop, watch for sudden changes in wind and rapid rainfall; gusty winds could impact travel on major roadways including I-40 and I-27.

This stretch of extreme heat is expected to persist through Saturday, with more comfortable, stormier weather returning late Sunday into Monday. Continue to monitor alerts as additional advisories are possible if storm coverage increases or temperatures remain elevated.
