Amarillo, TX – Residents in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles should prepare for potentially dangerous storms Monday afternoon through late Monday night, with the highest threat for flash flooding, large hail, and damaging winds after dark. The National Weather Service warns that repeated rounds of thunderstorms could quickly overwhelm drainage systems and make some roads impassable.

According to the NWS in Amarillo, Monday’s storm risk begins with scattered showers in the early afternoon before intensifying into widespread thunderstorms by evening. East and southeast winds will draw in moisture, fueling downpours capable of producing localized flash flooding. Hail up to 2 inches and wind gusts near 60 mph are possible, particularly in areas east of U.S. Highway 87 and south toward Palo Duro Canyon.

Travel could become hazardous Monday night, especially on rural roads prone to flooding. Residents should avoid driving through water-covered roadways, secure outdoor items, and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

Thunderstorm chances remain through early Tuesday, but conditions are expected to improve midweek as drier air moves in. Additional watches or warnings may be issued if storms develop faster than expected.
