Amarillo, TX – Dangerous heat is set to peak in Amarillo on Thursday, with temperatures climbing near 97°F and gusty south winds making outdoor activity riskier during the afternoon hours. Residents planning to be outside for work, school sports, or errands are urged to stay hydrated and limit strenuous activity between noon and 6 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, Thursday’s hot stretch will be accompanied by south winds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching up to 20 mph. The combination of heat and wind will quickly dry out surfaces, increasing fire danger across open areas. City parks, athletic fields, and construction sites could see elevated risks for heat-related illness.

While Friday will be slightly cooler at 94°F, the heat pattern will persist into Saturday before giving way to a slight chance of thunderstorms late Saturday night and Sunday. Any storms that do develop could briefly cool conditions but may also bring lightning and gusty winds.

High heat remains the main concern through the end of the week, and residents should check for updates as weekend storm chances develop.
