Amarillo, TX – A rapid warm-up is underway across the Texas Panhandle, with highs pushing into the upper 80s and low 90s as early as Monday afternoon, increasing the risk of grass fires in dry areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, temperatures will climb steadily through midweek, with widespread highs ranging from 80 to 95 degrees. While a few thunderstorms are possible in the eastern Panhandle, most areas west of Amarillo will remain dry, allowing fuels to dry out quickly.
Communities including Borger, Hereford, and Dalhart are expected to see minimal rainfall, while eastern locations such as Pampa and Shamrock carry slightly better storm chances Tuesday through Friday. Even there, coverage remains limited and inconsistent.
Winds will also play a role, with breezy afternoon conditions combining with low humidity to elevate fire danger, especially along U.S. 287 and Interstate 40 where open fields can allow fires to spread rapidly. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and secure trailer chains to prevent sparks.
Overnight lows will remain mild, generally in the 40s to 60s, offering little recovery for dry vegetation. The warm, dry pattern holds through the workweek, with fire weather concerns likely to increase if winds strengthen further.
