Amarillo, Texas – A potentially high-impact winter storm is lining up to bring heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles beginning Friday afternoon and lasting into late Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for a broad area including Amarillo, Canyon, Hereford, Borger, Pampa, Dumas, Perryton, Canadian, Wellington, and parts of the Oklahoma Panhandle such as Beaver. Snow totals between 5 and 10 inches are possible, with the heaviest bands capable of quickly covering roads and reducing visibility.
The most immediate concern is travel. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are expected to become slick, especially during the Friday evening commute. Interstate 40, U.S. 287, U.S. 87, and U.S. 60 could see hazardous conditions develop rapidly as snowfall intensifies Friday night.
Residents are urged to delay non-essential travel, prepare vehicles with emergency supplies, and dress in layers if venturing outside. Exposed skin should be covered to reduce the risk of frostbite as cold temperatures accompany the snow.
The exact placement of heavier snow bands remains uncertain, and conditions could change quickly. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as the storm approaches, with updates expected through Friday morning.
