Texas Panhandle — A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for parts of the western Texas Panhandle from noon Friday through 6 a.m. CST Sunday, as heavy mixed winter precipitation is expected to impact travel and road conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, Deaf Smith and Oldham counties can expect 4 to 6 inches of snow, along with light ice accumulations as periods of snow and freezing precipitation move through the area. Cities included in the warning are Hereford, Vega, Dawn, Wildorado, Boys Ranch, and Bootleg.

Forecasters say the combination of snow and ice will likely make roads slick and hazardous, with bridges and overpasses especially dangerous due to rapid icing. Travel could become very difficult at times, particularly during the Friday evening commute, when precipitation and temperatures favor worsening road conditions.

The storm is expected to begin around midday Friday, intensify through Friday night and Saturday, and gradually taper off by early Sunday morning. While ice amounts are expected to remain relatively light, even small accumulations combined with snow can significantly increase the risk of crashes and travel disruptions.

Residents are urged to consider delaying all non-essential travel during the warning period. Those who must drive should use extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in road conditions.

Emergency officials recommend keeping an extra flashlight, food, and water in vehicles in case motorists become stranded. Travelers can check the latest road conditions by calling 800-452-9292.

The National Weather Service advises closely monitoring forecast updates as the storm evolves and conditions change.
