Amarillo, Texas – A significant winter storm is expected to bring periods of snow, icy road conditions, and dangerous travel across the Texas Panhandle from Friday through Sunday, with the most disruptive impacts likely arriving late Saturday into early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, initial precipitation may begin as rain or a wintry mix Friday before transitioning to snow Friday night. Snow chances increase markedly Saturday, with the heaviest snowfall rates expected Saturday evening into Sunday morning as a stronger surge of moisture moves through the region.
Forecast guidance shows widespread accumulations across the Panhandle, with many communities facing several inches of snow. Portions of the central and eastern Panhandle, including Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, Clarendon, and Wheeler, could see totals ranging from 6 to locally over 10 inches by the time snow tapers Sunday. There is a 40 to 70 percent chance of snowfall rates reaching 1 to 2 inches per hour during the most intense bands, which could quickly overwhelm road crews.
Travel impacts are expected to be significant. Slick and snow-covered roadways are likely along I-40, US-287, and US-87, especially Saturday night. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall, keep emergency supplies in vehicles, and prepare for possible delays or closures.
Snow gradually diminishes Sunday, but hazardous conditions may linger as crews work to clear roads. Additional updates and advisories are expected as the storm evolves through the weekend.
