Amarillo, Texas – Dangerous heat and strong storms will grip the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles through Friday morning, with high temperatures near 95°F in Amarillo, Wellington, and Borger, and severe weather threats lasting into the night.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a wave of showers and thunderstorms will develop late Wednesday afternoon, intensifying into the evening and overnight. These storms could bring 1-2 inches of rain per hour, frequent lightning, and gusty winds—especially near Guymon, Beaver, Dalhart, and Boise City. A flash flooding risk of up to 14% is in effect for northern counties, including Beaver and Guymon, with localized flooding possible in low-lying areas.
City streets, highways like US-287 near Dumas, and rural roads could become hazardous if downpours persist. Residents should monitor for sudden water rise, avoid driving through flooded areas, and prepare for power outages. Keep mobile devices charged and avoid non-essential travel during peak storm times.
Hot weather will continue into the weekend, with temperatures staying in the 90s for most of the region. Stay tuned for new advisories, as more storms are possible Thursday night into Friday. Warnings remain in effect until further notice.
