Amarillo, Texas – Blistering heat and strong winds are sweeping across the Texas Panhandle Sunday, with temperatures nearing 90°F and wind gusts topping 35 mph in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, dry conditions will dominate the northwest Panhandles today, with the highest sustained winds expected in the northern and western counties, including Boise City, Stratford, and Dalhart. Wind speeds there may range from 25 to 35 mph, while Amarillo and surrounding cities like Pampa and Borger can expect 20 to 25 mph breezes through the evening.
Beaver, Guymon, and Canadian are also seeing highs between 89°F and 90°F, increasing fire weather concerns across the region. While storm chances are low, NWS meteorologists are closely watching the eastern Panhandles—particularly areas near Wheeler and Clarendon—for isolated storm development later today.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose items. Drivers on open highways, especially along U.S. Route 87 and I-40, should prepare for crosswinds.
This pattern is expected to continue into the evening hours, with no active warnings yet issued. NWS will provide updates if storm activity becomes more likely in the eastern counties.
