Lubbock, Texas – Strong thunderstorms are expected to intensify quickly this afternoon across the Texas Panhandle, with damaging conditions possible after 4 p.m. and lasting through tonight. Residents west of the I-27 corridor face the highest risk, including wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail up to the size of quarters, and pockets of heavy rain.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, storms will be most intense in areas such as Muleshoe, Morton, and Friona before spreading eastward into Lubbock, Plainview, and surrounding communities. While widespread flash flooding is not expected, localized flooding could occur where storms stall or drop heavier rainfall.

Travelers are advised to secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary driving during the strongest storm periods, especially along rural highways where visibility could drop rapidly. Those in mobile homes or weaker structures should have a safe shelter plan ready in case of severe wind or hail.

Storm activity is expected to diminish late tonight, but additional thunderstorm chances may return early in the week.
